Bob Kaiser, University of Wisconsin extension dairy agent, offers these insights when working with wet distillers grain:

  • Fresh wet distillers grain is basically a sterile material, with dry matter content ranging from 30 percent to 50 percent. When exposed to the air, the product has a shelf life of two to 10 days, depending on the weather.
  • You must be able to store it and feed it before spoilage occurs, so plan purchases accordingly.
  • The higher the dry matter content, the easier the product flows. Plus, it is less likely to freeze during cold weather and nutrients are less likely to leach out.
  • Work with your local plant manager to underscore the importance of product consistency.
  • Work with a nutritionist who knows how to optimize wet distillers grain, given your particular herd strategies and facilities.
