Rather than lifting 50-pound bags off of the floor, consider putting some of the bags on pallets to relieve back strain. You avoid lifting the bags off the floor, and having the bags elevated also makes it easier to pour the contents into 5-gallon pails when it comes time to feed calves. Pam Sojda, calf manager at Offhaus Farms in Batavia, N.Y., says she stacks four pallets on top of each other. The pallets have held up to two tons of 50-pound bags, she adds.
