Whether for business or pleasure, you need to be able to step away from your dairy for a day or two on occasion.

Standard operating procedures can help your employees take care of day-to-day tasks. But consider pulling together a few additional pieces of information to make processes go smoothly in your absence, suggests Chuck Schwartau, regional livestock extension educator for the University of Minnesota.

  • Identify people who can fill in for you before you need them; train them on your procedures.
  • Make a list of the people (with phone numbers included) whom your employees can call in case of emergency or if there are questions.
  • Highlight specific safety items.
  • Insert instructions and the emergency-contact list into a three-ring binder, label it and place it in a location where everyone can find it.
  • Update the lists when necessary.
