Protect fresh cow health

When cows freshen on your dairy, where do you milk them? That’s the question Charlene McLauchlan, technical services veterinarian with Monsanto Dairy Business, poses to producers.

If producers answer that they provide separate facilities for the fresh cows, the question then becomes, “How old is that equipment?”

Often times, when a dairy producer builds a new parlor, he will use the old equipment to create a separate milking facility for fresh and sick cows. However, he may be setting up the fresh cows for problems unless the equipment is kept in top working condition, with regular servicing.

If you’re seeing a lot of fresh cows develop mastitis after freshening, check out the milking equipment and the calving pen environment.
