Rubber mats in the holding area

The holding area is the place where cows stand idle the longest and are crowded. So, doesn’t it make sense to place resilient rubber-mat flooring in the holding area, as well as the travel lanes? Mercer Vu Dairy in Pennsylvania thinks so.

The dairy installed interlocking rubber mats in the holding area for greater cow comfort. And, with a crowd gate, the owners were even more willing to make the investment to ensure that the cows maintain a steady footing.

The only problem the dairy has had so far involved sand getting wedged under some of the mats in the rear of the holding area. The manufacturer re-installed the mats in that area using an improved anchoring technique, and the dairy hasn’t had any problems since.
