Sand bedding for calf hutches? You bet!

This Indiana dairy uses sand bedding in calf hutches with good results. The inorganic material works well for calves during the spring, summer and fall. But during the winter, the dairy switches to deep straw bedding so that the calves can snuggle in to help maintain body heat during the cold.

Before a new set of calves enter the hutches, all of the sand is removed and the hutches are pressure-washed. Then, a new bed of fresh sand is put in place.
