Want to shorten the duration and decrease the severity of clinical mastitis cases caused by environmental organisms?

Research reported in the May 2002 issue of the Journal of Dairy Science shows that you can make progress toward that goal by selecting sires with a low transmitting ability for somatic cell score. In the study, daughters of sires that transmit the lowest SCS had the least severe, shortest lasting clinical cases of mastitis from environmental pathogens during the first lactation.

In addition, the Penn State University and University of Nebraska re-searchers also discovered that daughters of sires that transmit longer productive life had less severe, shorter lasting clinical cases of coliform mastitis during the first lactation.
