Good semen tank management aids the success of your reproduction program. Neil Michael, director of global technical services for ABS Global, and Mark Heimes, district sales manager with ABS in the I-29 Corridor, shared these tips at the I-29 Dairy Conference held earlier this year.

  • Use tank monitors to monitor the temperature of the liquid nitrogen in the tank. “I would recommend having one in each canister,” Heimes says.
  • Avoid neck thawing. Always look into the neck of the tank for the bull’s identification number rather than pulling the canisters out of the neck of the tank.
  • Keep the tank locked. This prevents theft and keeps children from opening the tank. They may find it amusing to watch the liquid nitrogen vapor rise from the tank, but you will end up with damaged semen.
  • Wear clean, disposable gloves when removing straws.
