Tired of lugging a large flaming unit, personnel at Dairy Dreams, LLC, Casco, Wis., made their own lightweight unit. It utilizes a 1-pound propane tank — like those used for small torches — and about a 3-foot length of brake line with a flange on the end (see inset photo). The brake line is flexible, as well as inexpensive, and the disposable tanks are readily available at any hardware store. “I can flame a 160-cow pen in about 10 minutes,” says Beth Havel, dairy manager. Udders are singed about every three weeks.
