Support early weaning with rumen development

Research shows that rumen development helps prepare calves for weaning. Rumen development can be encouraged by keeping good-quality starter and clean, fresh water readily available, says Jim Quigley, senior technical service director with Diamond V Mills. Good-quality starter, he notes, should be:

  • Free of fines.
  • Highly palatable.
  • Formulated to regulate the rate of fermentation.
  • Made with feed additives that improve the efficiency and stability of rumen fermentation.
  • Fresh and clean.
  • Free of mold
  • Easy for calves to find without competition.
