If you have an automatic identification system that reads a transponder around the cow’s neck, consider placing an ear tag at the top of the neck strap to help you identify cows. The benefit, says Tom England, senior herd manager at Frey Farms, Conestoga, Pa., is that you can read the tags easily when working behind the cows. And, animals often lose ear tags, so having one more form of identification never hurts. The tags are held in place by a metal clip sold by the identification system’s manufacturer.
