The E6 Calf Ranch in Gill, Colo., knows a thing or two about identifying calves. They pick up calves from 30 dairies and have 10,000 calves on milk.

“Our ID strategy is to place an electronic ID in all calves and link that number to a large lot tag that has the birthday and the dairy of origin written on it for quick access,” says Kirt Espenson, owner of E6. They use Heifer Pro, a heifer-management software program, to manage this information.

All cattle actions, such as receiving, shipping and treatment, are recorded with electronic tag readers loaded directly to the software program. “The greatest value has been seen in information management and accuracy. Instead of recording actions manually, they are read with a reader, thus eliminating any errors,” Espenson adds.
