Telephone poles serve as brisket boards at McCarty Dairy near Colby, Kan. The dairy bought several used telephone poles for $15 apiece. Each pole is 30 feet to 35 feet in length, allowing it to fill in several free-stalls. The poles have “worked real well for us,” says Mike McCarty. In fact, he likes the poles better than conventional brisket boards made out of treated lumber. They are simple, cheap and easy to move, he says. Free-stall expert Nigel Cook, of the University of Wisconsin, agrees the poles can work well if they are smooth and well rounded.
