Ever since the Charles Ahlem Ranch in Hilmar, Calif., hired Everett Vieira as its milk-quality manager, it has earned top milk-quality premiums on a more consistent basis, says manager Mark Ahlem. The dairy earns 25 cents per hundredweight for milk with a somatic cell count of 200,000 or less, and 35 cents per hundredweight for milk with a SCC of 150,000 or less. Those premiums add up when multiplied across the production of 3,200 cows.

“There aren’t as many hiccups since we got Everett,” he adds.

And, Vieira’s emphasis on sanitation, properly maintained equipment and thorough milking procedures results in healthier cows.

“I think the big part is teamwork. Everyone has to work together,” Vieira says.
