This 8-foot-wide alley serves as a cow-transfer lane at the Transition Management Facility (TMF) north of Baldwin, Wis. The alley makes it easy for one person to move a cow from a free-stall pen to an individual pen at calving, says Paul Rapnicki, veterinarian at the University of Minnesota.

The TMF houses pre-fresh and fresh cows from two Baldwin-area dairies and is used as a training and research facility by the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine.
