Transporting round bales improperly can be deadly. Protect yourself and others from round bale accidents by implementing these precautions suggested by Howard Doss, agricultural engineer at Michigan State University:

1. Move tractor wheels to the widest practical setting.

2. Feather the controls to stop and start the loader arms gradually when lowering or lifting the loader.

3. Add weights to the tractor to balance the front or rear loads as recommended in the operator’s manual.

4. Stay clear of electrical lines.

5. Never transport or lift anyone on the loader or its attachments.

6. Use a ROPS-equipped tractor to protect yourself against a rollover.

7. Use an approved bale-handling attachment to secure bales on the loader and prevent them from rolling backward onto the operator.
