With summer and fall come thunderstorms — and power outages. But cows still need to be fed and milked. Dairies often turn to portable generators to help deal with these emergencies. However, according to experts at Consumers Power, you should remember the following guidelines when using:

  • Make sure the generator is the right size for the job.
  • Have a transfer switch installed in your fuse/electrical box before using a portable generator.
  • Never connect a generator to wall outlets or to your building’s electrical system.
  • Make sure the unit’s voltage rating matches the rating of equipment.
  • Make sure the generator is connected to an acceptable ground.
