Too much protein in dairy diets has a high cost to you and the environment. And it offers no benefit to your cows.

Therefore, keep tabs on milk urea nitrogen (MUN) to help optimize the amount of protein you feed.

“MUN testing is the best way to determine whether you’re feeding too much or too little protein,” says Michel Wattiaux, University of Wisconsin dairy nutritionist, because MUN is an indicator of nitrogen not used by the cow to produce milk.

A new tool called Management MUN can help. Developed by Wattiaux and AgSource Cooperative Services, Management MUN gives producers a monthly update on their cows’ dietary protein efficiency.
