A new report, Vertical Coordination of Agriculture in Farming-Dependent Areas, is available from the Council for Agricultural Science and Technology (CAST). The 40-page publication is designed to help policymakers, community leaders and producers weigh the advantages and disadvantages of contract farming and other forms of vertical coordination, a term that refers to the coordination of different stages within the food-value chain. In addition, the report addresses public-policy considerations, such as odor control, and analyzes how vertical coordination can change rural communities with farming-dependent economies.

The publication is $25, plus shipping. To order, contact CAST at (515) 292-2125. The report also is available in a PDF format online at: www.cast-science.org/castpubs.htm#vert
