Dave Gandolpho, owner of High Plains Dairy in Castleford, Idaho, places dry-cow tubes in a box on the vacuum pump for two hours instead of placing them in a hot water bath. Gandolpho employed this practice after his veterinarian, John Day of Dairy Health Services in Jerome, Idaho, expressed concern that bacteria in the water bath may contaminate the tubes, and thus increase the risk of bacteria entering the teat during dry-cow therapy.
