Bedding with recycled manure solids is nothing new. However, the dairy industry today uses some different manure-management technologies, and some dairies even get manure solids from another dairy for bedding, explains Larry Smith, professor emeritus at OhioStateUniversity. That provides some unknowns, which increases your risk.

For example, it is not known if digesters kill all pathogens present in manure. And if you get recycled manure solids from another farm, you should know if that farm is dealing with Johne’s, salmonella or some other disease.
