You might be surprised how much resting your calves and heifers do each day. Research suggests that calves lie down 92 percent of the time, while older heifers rest around 50 percent to 65 percent of the time. All that time resting makes the bedding in your calf area critical. Bedding can be a major source of heat loss in cold conditions and heat production in warm conditions, which affects the animal’s energy use for growth.

“We need to move from just bedding calves to thinking about how it affects growth,” says Pat Hoffman, dairy scientist at the University of Wisconsin.
