Cool your maternity pen

New research from Kansas State University shows that a combination of evaporative cooling pads and fans, along with feed-line soakers, can be successful in reducing heat stress in prepartum cows. Evaporative pads and fans were installed in a maternity barn and used to cool the bedded pack. When temperatures reached 70 degrees F, both sets of cooling equipment came on. Evaporative cooling significantly reduced mean 24-hour vaginal temperatures in the cows from 102.1 F to 101.8 F. The greatest effect was seen during peak heat-stress hours. The research was reported last month at the annual meeting of the American Dairy Science Association.
