Too much wet distillers grain in the ration can hurt dry matter intake and milk production, according to a South Dakota State University study.

In the study, wet distillers made up 10 percent, 20 percent, 30 percent or 40 percent of diet dry matter.

As the amount of wet distillers increased in the diet, dry matter intake and milk production decreased. In fact, there was a nearly 12-pound difference in milk production between cows fed 10-percent wet distillers and cows fed 40-percent wet distillers (please see the table below).

The South Dakota researchers recommend that wet distillers make up no more than 15 percent to 20 percent of diet dry matter.
