Lameness hurts reproduction

Lame cows take longer to return to estrus after calving, according to research from the University of Florida.

The results show lame cows were 3.5 times more likely to experience delayed ovarian activity than non-lame herdmates. If lameness had been prevented in the herd involved in the study, it would have reduced the delay in estrus activity by 71 percent, the researchers said in the December 2004 Journal of Dairy Science.
