The Canadian study cited at left also sheds light on the prevalence and transmission rate of Neospora caninum. Based on an analysis of blood-serum samples, the detected vertical transmission rate for Neospora was 40.7 percent in the 125 herds involved in the study. Vertical transmission is the transfer of Neospora from an infected cow to her calf through the placenta. It is the most common route of Neospora infection on dairy farms.

The study also found that the overall prevalence of antibodies to Neospora among cattle in the 125 herds was 11.2 percent.
