Retained placenta treatment update

If you manually remove or use uterine antibiotic pills to treat a retained placenta, you might want to consider systemic-antibiotic treatment instead.

A large-scale German field trial shows that the reproductive performance of cows given systemic antibiotics (ceftiofur) for the treatment of retained placenta was no different than that of cows treated by either removing the retained placenta, inserting antibiotic pills into the uterus or a combination of these two strategies. The research appeared in the February Journal of Dairy Science.
