Develop dehorning protocols

Researchers at the University of Guelph suggest the following when it comes to dehorning calves:

  • Develop a dehorning protocol; include input from veterinarians and producers during development.
  • Consider using a nerve block at dehorning, unless using caustic paste.
  • Dehorn calves at a young age.
  • Consider using an approved non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drug following dehorning.
