Corn stover good for more than ethanol production

New research at Penn State University suggests that corn stover — the stalks and leaves leftover after combining — can be used not only to produce ethanol, but also to directly generate electricity. The scientists successfully used a microbial fuel cell to convert the stover into electricity.

The U.S. produces about 250 million tons of stover annually, and 90 percent of it is left unused in fields. Therefore, if commercialized, this technology has ample fuel resources.
