New Zealand researchers are working to develop vending machines that dispense foods based on individual nutritional needs. So, rather than every consumer receiving the same product like they do now, in the future, each product can be altered to meet specific dietary desires. They’re calling the system POSIFoods, or point-of-sale-individualized foods.

For example, one vending customer may select a lowfat product enriched with a vitamin mix to meet his needs, while the next customer may choose the same food, but with a different vitamin blend or one higher in dairy calcium and iron.

Supporters say snacks and other foods could be tailored for dieters or those with health issues, such as heart ailments or diabetes. And the machines could be installed in schools to ensure that kids are snacking healthy. BASF and the dairy ingredient firm, Fonterra, are funding the research.
