Researchers from WashingtonStateUniversity and around the world have discovered how to trigger nodulation in legumes — like alfalfa — without the bacteria normally necessary to do so. Nodulation is a key element of the nitrogen-fixing process. This means that someday, non-legume crops may be able to fix their own nitrogen and reduce the need for inorganic fertilizers.
