An Israeli firm has developed a new sensor to monitor rumination time, or how long it takes a cow to chew and digest her cud.

Researchers say this information can provide producers with helpful early-warning health clues. For example, decreased rumination may indicate the onset of disease. Or, the tool may help in feed quality and quantity evaluations, since these factors directly impact rumination time.

The technology is expected to hit the market sometime in the next year. We’ll keep you informed as more information becomes available.
