Dieters have an ally in their quest to slim down – cheese.
While cheese is often avoided by dieters, blogger Liz Vaccariello suggests that cheese can actually be a beneficial weight-loss tool. Cheese, and other “fattening” foods that dieters are usually told to avoid, have unique fat-releasing properties that can help people lose weight faster when consumed in moderation.
Not only does cheese have this unique property, but a University of Tennessee study showed that consuming three servings of dairy a day significantly reduced body fat in obese subjects. Dairy also is one of the best sources of calcium, which is another fat releaser. However, a study in the Nutrition and Metabolism journal earlier this year found that the weight-loss advantages of dairy may go beyond the benefits of calcium.
Regardless of how dairy helps dieters reach their weight-loss goals, other evidence also supports Vaccariello’s blog post. Last week, ABC New and Reader’s Digest jointly recognized the weight-loss advantages of dairy.
“Unfortunately, some myths persist that dairy sabotages weight loss, but science proves this couldn't be further from the truth,” ABC News and Reader’s Digest reported. “Research shows that those who have deficiencies in calcium hold a greater fat mass and experience less control of their appetite. What's more, studies have found that dairy sources of calcium — like yogurt, low- or nonfat cheese, and milk — are markedly more effective in accelerating fat loss than other sources.
In addition to cheese, Vaccariello also pointed to the weight-loss benefits of other traditionally diet-breaking foods, including red wine, chocolate, coconut oil, and nuts.
