Yogurt boom ignites N.Y. dairy rebound

While dairies across the country struggle to overcome economic hurdles, New York’s dairy industry is booming thanks to the state’s thriving yogurt companies.

"The fact that we have a yogurt boon here in New York is great because it allows us an opportunity for another marketplace for our milk to go," said New York Farm Bureau President Dean Norton.

Chobani, Fage, and other yogurt industry giants depend on New York dairies to keep their yogurt flowing. Chobani, the country’s top Greek yogurt producer, says that 93 percent of the milk used by its New York plant comes from local dairies.

"Our focus is bringing that quality milk in upstate New York and making high quality milk, adding value to it," says Chobani CEO Halil Ulukaya.

Other yogurt companies are following suit. Alpina opened its first North American manufacturing facility in Batavia, N.Y., because of its convenient location.
