A fire ripped through a cow barn at a dairy farm near Cameron, N.Y., on Friday, killing 50 cows, destroying the barn and injuring two firefighters. Nine area fire departments responded to the blaze at the Allegar Dairy Farm, according to The Evening Tribune in a report available here.
Crews were called to the scene at 4 p.m. on Sept. 14 and remained on the scene for more than seven hours. Investigators believe that an electrical problem may have sparked the fire, which started in the barn’s hayloft.
Janie Ferguson, a local photographer and friend of the Allegar family, also reported on the fire, providing images of the inferno and a look into the devastation felt by the family.
"We were able to save several heifers and the youngest calves, but the milk cows and feed are gone. We are so thankful that no one was hurt, and that they weren't in the barn when it started,” Daniel Allegar told Ferguson.
