U.S. Rep. David Valadao (R-Calif.) and Dana Coale, Deputy Administrator USDA /AMS Dairy Programs, will address the California Dairy Campaign (CDC) and California Farmers Union (CFU) Joint Annual Meeting, Saturday, Jan. 18, 6 p.m. at the Hanford Fraternal Hall 1015 N 10th Ave., Hanford, Calif.

Valadao will discuss legislative activities in Congress that will affect farmers and ranchers in 2014. USDA Deputy Administrator Dana Coale will discuss the federal milk marketing order system and the rulemaking process to establish a federal order.

Previously announced, two other FMMO informational meetings are scheduled in California this week:

  • Thursday, Jan. 16, 1 p.m., Tulare Ag Commissioner’s office, 4437 S. Laspina Street, Tulare, Calif.
  • Friday, Jan. 17, 3 p.m., Modesto Double Tree Hotel, 1150 9th Street, Modesto, Calif.

At those meetings, Coale and her team will be available to answer questions about the FMMO system. Three major California cooperatives  – California Dairies, Inc., Dairy Farmers of America and Land O’Lakes – are currently working on the details needed to petition USDA for a hearing to create a California federal order.

The challenges and opportunities of federal and California milk marketing orders will also be the topic of a panel discussion during Western United Dairymen’s (WUD) annual convention in San Luis Obispo, Calif.

A panel discussion, moderated by WUD CEO Michael Marsh, CEO, , will include Coale and attorneys Chip English, a partner at Davis, Wright, Tremaine LLP, and John J. Vlahos, Partner, Hanson Bridgett LLP. The discussion will be held Thursday, March 6, at 9:30 a.m.
