While calcium stones are one of the most common types of kidney stones, they aren’t caused by consuming more calcium. Instead, new research shows that a calcium-rich diet could actually prevent kidney stones.

The study looked at more than 5,000 documented cases of kidney stones over the last 56 years. The medical researchers evaluated the cases and patient dietary habits.

The researchers found that patients who consumed more dietary calcium from food were 20 percent less likely to develop kidney stones than those who had a lower intake of calcium. Read the study here.

“I encourage my kidney stone patients to consume enough dietary calcium to optimize bone health—ideally between three to four servings per day. Our study provides additional evidence that restriction of dietary calcium has no role in the prevention of kidney stones,” lead researcher and medical doctor Eric Taylor told Daily RX News.

The study was published online in the March issue of The Journal of Urology. It will be published in the printed journal in October.
