This week, the California Milk Advisory Board (CMAB), representing California's dairy families, announced the award of more than $1.4 million in cash, books and school supply prizes to elementary schools in Southern California as part of the Real Seal Appeal! sweepstakes drawing.
Elementary schools in 10 Southern California counties spanning from San Luis Obispo to San Diego participated in the sweepstakes, which reached nearly 42,000 teachers in 99 districts with information about healthy eating for students and families and how they could collect Real California Milk seals from milk and dairy products to win.
Los Angeles Unified School District, the largest district in the area, snipped its way to over $527,000 in prizes, followed by Wilsona School District and Mountain View Elementary School District as the districts winning the most prize money.
"The Real Seal Appeal! sweepstakes was a true community giving opportunity with families, teachers and dairy farmers all working together,” Stan Andre, CEO of the CMAB said in a news release. “ California dairy farmers were able to support kids, teachers and schools with families, teachers and schools showing their support for the California dairy families that live and work in communities throughout the state.”
Each Real California Milk seal submitted counted as one sweepstakes entry, so the more seals collected, the more opportunities schools had to win. Top winning schools include:
- Twin Lakes Elementary School, El Monte: $59,500
- Vista San Gabriel Elementary School, Palmdale: $53,500
- Ocotillo Elementary School, Palmdale: $35,500
- Figueroa Street Elementary School, Los Angeles: $28,500
- ICEF Vista Elementary Academy, Los Angeles: $27,000
- Potrero Elementary School, Potrero: $26,000
- Indian Hills Elementary School, Jurupa Valley: $21,500
- Ted J. Porter Elementary School, Fontana: $20,500
"Everyone wins with this promotion and it is a pleasure to award money, supplies and books to help make California schools stronger," Andre said.
The Real Seal Appeal! three-month sweepstakes kicked off October 1, 2011, offering Southern California schools in participating school districts the opportunity to win money and prizes simply by collecting Real California Milk seals from the milk and dairy products they purchased at retail and turning them in to their teachers to enter.
In addition to much needed classroom resources - including $20,000, $10,000 and $5,000 grand prizes, Scholastic books and school supply gift cards - the promotion provided healthy eating and drinking messages to children and families as well as an opportunity for students to win Wii Fit games to help promote fitness.
