Installation and construction are nearly complete on a California anaerobic digester that will process 55,000 gallons of solid and liquid dairy waste per day. The digester is scheduled to open Sept. 30, at Calgren Renewable Fuels, Pixley, Calif.

The digester, built by Andgar of Ferndale, Wash., is the first California installation for DVO Inc., a Wisconsin-based company. The project is designed to hold approximately 1.4 million gallons of manure and organic waste from Four J Farm Dairy, a nearby dairy farm with approximately 2,000 head of cattle.

Biosolids will be sent back to Four J Farm Dairy to be used as a high-quality, low-pathogen cattle bedding. Liquid nutrients from the digestion process will also make its way back to the farm to fertilize growing crops. In addition, biogas produced by the unit will replace thousands of gallons of natural gas currently being used by Calgren’s on-site cogeneration facility to produce 55 million gallons of ethanol each year.

The digester utilizes DVO’s patented Two-Stage Mixed Plug Flow™ anaerobic digester technology. DVO said it has installed nearly 100 anaerobic digester systems on more than 70 farms in 17 states.
