USA Today reports a dairy which supplies 95 percent of the raw milk in California is accused of selling contaminated milk, infecting five children with E. coli, and is not allowed to sell raw milk products until more testing is complete.
Five children were infected with the same strain of E. coli O157:H7 last week. The only link between the children was the raw milk they consumed from The Organic Pastures of Fresno. Three of the children were hospitalized for a serious condition which could lead to kidney failure.
The California Department of Food and Agriculture ordered the recall and quarantine even though none of the milk at the children’s homes or at the dairy tested positive for E. coli.
The dairy must pass a second round of testing to guarantee its products are safe before the dairy can sell any more raw milk products. Test results are expected around Dec. 1.
The Organic Pastures of Fresno sells raw milk and other dairy products and produces close to 2,400 gallons of milk per day.
