University researchers in Florida who work with animals are now lobbying the state legislature for the right to shelter personal information from animal activists intent on intimidating them.

A bill currently moving through the Florida House of Representatives would exempt the personal contact information of animal researchers at state-funded research facilities from being part of the public record.

Officials with the University of Florida, along with several other state universities — including the University of Central Florida, Florida International University and the University of South Florida — are supporting the bill as a necessary protection for researchers from threats and harassment dished out by animal activists.

If approved, the bill would exempt the personal identification of researchers in animal records on treatment and care, research protocols and approvals, purchase or billing records, animal care and use committee records and facility and lab records.

In Gainesville, Fla., where the main campus of the university is located, a radical animal rights group has vowed to continue to harass UF scientists.

The activists, who are nominally aligned with the innocuous Eleventh Hour for Animals, a nonprofit promoting the adoption of rescue dogs and cats, proclaim that they intend to expose “the taxpayer-funded animal torture industry inside the University of Florida.”

After a three-year lawsuit, Eleventh Hour for Animals, which is connected to the activist organization Negotiation is Over (which maintains the virulent website www.negotiationisover.net), obtained the university’s public veterinary records in April 2013, according to a report published by The Independent Florida Alligator news service, and the activists posted personal phone numbers, addresses and photos of UF animal researchers.

“The university wants to be very open and honest about its research,” Janine Sikes, a UF spokeswoman, told IFA. “[But] it wants to stop these personal attacks against our researchers.”

Sikes said the animal activists have made harassing phone calls, targeted researchers’ children and family members and even made death threats. As a result, Eleventh Hour for Animals is under surveillance from local law enforcement, as well as the FBI.

Judge them by their words

Of course, Camille A. Marino, the founder of Negotiation Is Over and now director of Eleventh Hour for Animals, claimed that the group never threatened anyone or committed any violent acts against the researchers at UF.

“The only violence that is happening is the violence [the researchers] commit against animals for money,” Marion said. “My intent is never to threaten anyone, only to provide information that the community has a right to know.”

However, here’s a sample of Marino’s “intentions,” straight from her online posts. Judge for yourself how non-threatening her intentions are:

“While many above-ground strategies remain ineffective, the MDA (militant direct action) campaigns of the animal liberation underground — liberating animals from captivity, inflicting economic damage through sabotage, and creative intimidation tactics — have yielded quantifiable gains. But even tougher means may be necessary to end the billion-dollar animal holocaust industry by bringing the war home to the vivisectors, professors, academic departments and administrators and the entire staff of private research facilities.

“Every time a vivisector’s car or home — and eventually, the abuser him/herself — blows up, flames of liberation light up the sky. And now we have a golden opportunity to begin to destroy the foundations upon which Bogus Big Pharma and the academic-industrial complex rest — the vivisection research model can be made unworkable and obsolete.”

Does that sound like someone who (allegedly) espouses non-violence?

Like virtually every other aspect of the animal activist agenda — the world can easily survive on nothing but plants, medical research can be done solely on computers and indigenous people in harsh climates who dependent on animal foods for survival can switch to imported soy products — their extremist convictions are a toxic stew of false assertions, misguided perspectives and amoral existentialism that supports a twisted “ends justify the means” approach to changing social and economic institutions with which they disapprove.

Camille Marino is merely one of a legion of self-proclaimed “reformers” whose agenda consists of anything but.

The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Dan Murphy, a veteran food-industry journalist and commentator.

So far Ms. Marino only walks and quacks like a domestic terrorist. Sadly, we will have to wait until she actually wreaks physical harm on someone before we can prosecute her. Too bad. She obviously has no redeeming value to society, as it is. Just another noisome piece of fanatic activist garbage.

"Shelley", typical twisted reasoning of someone who has absolutely no empathy for the suffering of others. You must hold stock in some dangerous quack pharmaceutical company. A mentality such as your is the danger to society, not Ms. Marino.

Very glad to see this article is titled "Fighting the fanatics" that way it distinguishes Camille Marino from the rest of the Animal Rights Movement. THANK YOU, Dan Murphy! My one question I have: "Who in their right mind in our government let Marino off of probation almost TWO years early?" Her probation was terminated in January of this year after serving jail time and 1 year probation for pleading guilty for "Trespassing" and "Unlawful Posting of Message with Aggravating Circumstances" charges in Wayne County Courts in Michigan back in November of 2012 while her “Aggravated Stalking” charge was dismissed. Don’t think that her incarceration or probation rehabilitated her one bitl! Also, I would like to offer a correction to this article. As far as the name of her organization, "Eleventh Hour for Animals," it is NOT a non-profit organization that had previously worked on cat and dog rescue. It is a name crafted by Marino and Karen Kline back in November of 2013 to distance their emphasis away from the bad taste their “Negotiations is Over” (NIO) group name had developed prior to Camille’s court ordered vacation from society. Don't judge all Animal Rights Activists based on Camille Marino!

Please know that Camille Marino is not representative of the Animal Liberation movement as she also calls for the kidnapping and killing of children which a true ARA would never think of. Camille Marino is the Charles Manson of her own movement that thrives off of notoriety and shock. Please do not insult our community by connecting her name with the animal liberation movement.

RIGHT ON, ZOE! I find it extremely interesting that the few followers Marino still has I know two to be mothers with a child which is paradoxical to be following someone who espouses the kidnapping and harming of children to further their agenda, even if it written in a “story” format. Her tactics are not limited to just harassing researchers either as she has set her sights on animal rights activists, too. Marino is a rogue outlier of not just the animal rights movement but of society itself.

This article and these comments are far and away the most uneducated, ignorant that I have read to date. At least at the UF articles people are intelligent. We have been scared and lied to by the University of Florida for a couple years now and NOT A SINGLE THING THEY SCARE US WITH HAS HAPPENED. Oh children, don't talk to animal people because they are sooooo scarry. Well for me and my friends we want to hear what they have to say because all you people only talk about the animal people not the issue of the cruelty of the testing. I'm guessing they have some pretty serious information if UF will fight this hard against people who disagree with them. For me, I have only ever seen a bunch of middle-aged hippy type people with flyers. And no amount of article or links or crap like this here can change the fact that NOTHING BAD HAS EVER HAPPENED.

Tech233, or Lisa, all of Marino's tactics have been carried out over the internet via emails and postings, not in person. I know that this article is about UF but remember that Marino plead guilty up in Michigan for these very tactics against a researcher at Wayne State University. In this day and age, all threats or call for threats, intended to be carried out or not, must be taken seriously.

Is this the same Camille A Marino of Wildwood, Florida that was arrested for shoplifting at Publix in 2010? http://www.lakecountyclerk.org/record_searches/online_court_records/online_court_records_detail.asp? case_id=80730493 Once again, she is asking her "colleagues" to send her money. Are her disability payments not enough for her to live on? What assurance do her few remaining supporters have that ANY money sent to her will be used for a legitimate purpose?

Lisa, get real! Do you honestly believe that Camille Marino or any of her sycophants haven't harmed or threatened anyone? Are you aware that Brian Vaillancourt, one of Camille's loyal supporters, has been sentenced to nine YEARS in prison for aggravated arson? Furthermore, are you aware that this same individual called one of the UF researchers and threatened to burn his home down: http://earthfirstjournal.org/newswire/2014/02/11/brian-vaillancourt-gets-9-years-for-alf-arson/ Honestly, what planet do you live on!

Thanks, Turk 182! I did not know that about Marino already having an convicted arrest for shoplifting - I am glad that I am not and never did sent her any money, but unfortunately, I know several people who were sucked into sending her money mounting into the 100's, and they now deeply regret having been duped by Marino. Also, very interesting the link that you shared about Brian as the text is attributed to Negotiation is Over (NIO) which I wonder how Camille, Lisa, and the “bunch of middle-aged hippy type people with flyers” going to explain that UF has had threats against their staff by activists that NIO is promoting. Very interesting indeed!

Another thing of note is that Ms. Marino receives disability pay due to a mental impairment, not physical injury or illness. She also suffers from permanent physical defects which she tells people was from a motorcycle accident, but which were the result of a heroin overdose. I wonder if the state of Florida "disability" department might be interested to know she has been receiving a considerable amount (tens of thousands of dollars) of unreported income from her cult members and unknowing supporters!

Since Ms Marino has no problem with publishing other people’s personal information, perhaps then she will not mind hers being listed here for everyone to take a second and thank her for being such an outspoken .... (I just don't say those words in public). It is all considered free speech, right? I have TWO WORDS for Ms Marino when she finally reads these comments, “SCREEN SHOT.” You can post and delete on Facebook all you want but it is being preserved for posterity. Karma’s a b-otch! Maybe we will compile a book called “The Best-No!-the Worst of Camille De Vil ” while you are in jail next time. It should be a best seller unlike your rag being published soon.
