Currently 72 percent of the nation’s corn is rated in good or excellent condition, down a bit from 73 percent seen last week and 75 percent reported on July 28.

Even with the decline, the 2014 crop is the best seen since 2004:

The country’s best corn is currently in Missouri, where 83 percent is rated in good or better condition. Illinois and Pennsylvania corn is also notable, with both states reporting 80 percent of corn in these conditions.

The USDA also reported 22 percent of corn has dented, compared to 10 percent last year and the five-year-average of 27 percent.  This progress is also on-par with the USDA’s Aug. 15, 2004 report, when 23 percent of corn had dented.

Soybeans: 83 percent setting pods
Soybeans are also progressing well. The USDA’s report also showed 83 percent of soybeans setting pods, 4 percentages points above the five-year average and 13 percentage points ahead of last year’s progress.

Unlike corn, soybean conditions rose this week, with 71 percent in good or better condition. This is up 1 percentage point from last week’s report.

The best soybeans are in Louisiana and Illinois, where 82 percent and 78 percent of soybeans are in good or excellent condition receptively.
