Weekly dairy cow slaughter under federal inspection

Week ending March 15: 60,800 head

Year-to-date (YTD) 2014: 651,600 head

YTD compared to same period 2013: -60,500 head

Highlights: Third-highest weekly total in 2014. For the week, 32% came from USDA Zone 5 (IL, IN, MI, MN, OH & WI); 25% came from USD Zone 9 (AZ, CA, HI & NV).

January milk marketings surpassed commercial disappearance

Monthly commercial disappearance of milk used in all dairy products fell below U.S. dairy farmer milk marketings in January, the first that's happened since June 2013, according to USDA’s monthly Dairy Data report.

Commercial disappearance of milk used in all dairy products during January 2014 totaled 16.92 billion lbs., about 296 million lbs. less than U.S. producer milk marketings of 17.20 billion lbs. for the month.

Adding to available supplies, beginning commercial stocks totaled 11.17 billion lbs., and imports for the month totaled 333 million lbs., for a total of 28.70 billion lbs.

At the end of January 2014, ending commercial stocks totaled 11.80 billion lbs., up about 630 million lbs. compared to December 2013, but still about 1.66 billion lbs. less than January 2013.

USDA proposes reduction in Beef Promotion Board membership; seeks nominees

USDA’s Ag Marketing Service is proposing to reapportion membership on the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board from 103 to 99 members to match shifts in cattle inventory levels.

Under the proposal, domestic cattle producer representation on the board would decrease from 96 to 93, and importer representation would decrease from seven to six.

A state or unit must have an inventory of 500,000 head of cattle to be represented on the board and is entitled to an additional member for each additional 1 million head of cattle. The revised representation would be effective with nominations in 2014 for appointments effective early in the year 2015.

USDA is also seeking nominations for people to serve on the to serve on the Cattlemen’s Beef Board.

Vacancies for producer and importer member positions will occur in Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, the Southwest Unit (California and Nevada), and the Importer Unit.

Any U.S. beef producer who owns cattle, or any beef importer, can be considered for nomination. Nominations are due by June 1.
