4-State Dairy Days scheduled in Arkansas
The 25th Annual 4-State Dairy Days and Dairy Camp will be held June 19-22 at the Benton County Fairgrounds, Bentonville, Ark. The event is open to 4-H, FFA and FCCLA members, ages 5 to 19, from Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Kansas. It is organized by the Benton County Dairy Industry Association to promote the dairy industry and providing opportunities for youth to learn and compete in a fun, safe, family-friendly environment.
The weekend kicks off with a dairy camp, organized by the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service, June 19-20. Activities include workshops on grooming and clipping, dairy showmanship, dairy knowledge, marketing dairy products and dairy careers.
Friday’s Dairy Days events include an Arkansas Dairy Ambassador Contest, Dairy Skill-A-Thon, quiz bowl contests, Dairy Olympics and an ice cream social.
The Select Dairy Heifer Sale will be held on Saturday, along with a silent auction, dairy judging contest, senior fitting contest and showmanship competition.
The All-Breed Dairy Show, including Ayrshire, Brown Swiss, Holstein, Jersey, Guernsey, Red and White, and Milking Shorthorn classes will take place on Sunday, followed by a dairy commercial heifer show. For more information, visit 4statedairydays.org.
Florida Small Farms Dairy Conference scheduled
A Small Farms Dairy Conference will be held June 19-20, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., at the Frank Stronach Conference Center, Citra, Fla.
This two-day conference is for people who own or work for a small (1-50) animal dairy, or are considering investing their time and resources in this business. The program includes a visit to a dairy farm whose owners create and sell their own artisan cheeses.
Management topics for dairy cattle and goat farming to be addressed include:
• animal selection
• calf raising
• diseases and parasites
• grazing options for small dairies
• forage options and pasture management
• soil sampling
• dairy regulations and housing specifications
• forage testing and results interpretation
• basic bovine nutrition
