Dairy CPI: Slight rise in December

Consumers saw retail dairy product prices climb slightly in December, according to unadjusted monthly Consumer Price Index (CPI) data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Overall December 2013 retail dairy product prices were +0.4% compared to November 2013, but -0.5% compared to December 2012. That compares to retail prices for all food eaten at home, which was +0.1% compared to November and +0.4% compared to the year before.

Checking out individual products (December 2013 vs. November 2013 and December 2012, respectively): fluid milk: +0.9%; +0.1% [whole milk: +0.9%; -0.2%; other milk: +1.2%; +0.3%]; cheese: no change; -1.0%; butter: +0.9%; +0.9%; ice cream: +0.3%; +0.6%; and “other” dairy products: +0.3%; -1.5%.
