Corn conditions in the top 18 producing states dropped slightly this week with 54 percent of corn in “good” to “excellent” condition, compared to 47 percent last week and 70 percent last year. The USDA’s latest Crop Progress report also indicated that more than half of corn crop has now dented.
Crop Conditions
Between Hurricane Irene’s drenching and parched fields in Texas, conditions were only slightly lower than last week’s report but remain well below 2010’s report:

After holding the status of “best corn conditions in the nation” for weeks, Wisconsin was finally knocked down to having the second best corn conditions in the nation. Nebraska reported 77 percent of corn in “good” to “excellent” condition, making it just 1 percentage point above Wisconsin’s report. Other states with positive corn conditions include South Dakota (73 percent), North Dakota (69 percent) and Michigan (64 percent).
Texas, North Carolina and Kansas rounded out the corn conditions list as having the worst conditions on the country for yet another week.
Although Texas crops have leveled out for the past three reports, the state’s corn fields remain in the worst condition in the country.

Progress Update
Much of the nation’s corn – 88 percent – has now progressed beyond the dough stage. Fifty-three percent of corn has dented, compared to the five-year average of 54 percent and last year’s pace of 70 percent. Corn has also reached maturity in 9 percent of the fields with 12 states reported mature corn. North Carolina (81 percent), Texas (65 percent) and Tennessee (42 percent) reported the highest percentages of mature corn.
