Former Holstein breeder eyeing Colorado governor’s office

Dairy farmer, banker, Congressman, author, and editor-in-chief are a few of the titles Bob Beauprez holds on his résumé. But, he’s not done, aiming for the Colorado governor’s chair.

Beauprez grew up on a dairy farm in Lafayette, Colo., and went to the University of Colorado, about 20 minutes away. He returned to the 500-cow Registered Holstein dairy farm and eventually served on the Holstein Association USA board of directors for eight years. His 9-year-old cow, Geneva, sold for $250,000, a very large amount at the time

click image to zoom During that time he also traveled as a cattle judge, but in 1990 the family’s herd dispersal made way for a golf course and 1,350 homes on their 700 acre farm.

With proceeds from the farm’s sale, Beauprez took a stake in a local bank. Since then, he served one term as a Congressman for Colorado, and ran an unsuccessful election as the Republican Candidate for Colorado governor in 2006. He has since written a book about his conservative values and serves as editor-in-chief of a political website.

This year, he has four competing GOP hopefuls in effort to unseat current governor John Hickenlooper.
