Farmers are working to meet the growing demand for local, sustainably grown food by creating small-scale entrepreneurial farm businesses. To facilitate these new farm businesses and address the needs of a new generation of aspiring entrepreneurial farmers, University of Illinois Extension will host “Is Entrepreneurial Farming for You?” on Monday, Dec. 3, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Boone County Extension office, 205 Cadillac Court, Unit 3, in Belvidere.

This program is designed to help people who are considering starting a farm and to present issues they should think through before starting and managing a farm-based business. Workshop participants will have the opportunity to meet experienced farmers and to ask questions about different successful farm enterprises.

Topics covered will include: resource assessment, goal setting, financial planning, and marketing options. Jane Zeien of the Illinois Wool and Fiber Mill will share her experiences of starting in sheep and growing her business to provide milling services to other farmers. Mary Brubach from Susie’s Garden Patch will speak about why she left a full time job to come back to farming.

The workshop will be presented by Ellen Phillips, local food systems and small farms educator from U of I Extension. Cost for this program is $20 per person and includes handouts. Pre-registration is required by Monday, Nov. 26. For more information or to register, call U of I Extension, Boone County, at 815-544-3710 or visit the website at http://web.extension.illinois.edu/bdo/.
