Now that Greek yogurt has conquered the dairy aisle, the popular dairy product is headed for a new market – school.
The USDA announced this week that starting this fall, Greek yogurt will be served in school cafeterias to students in New York, Idaho, Tennessee and Arizona. A USDA spokeswoman told The Hill that these states were chosen because they "represent different regions of the country with varying proximity to yogurt manufacturers, and will help test distribution through different warehousing models.”

Idaho and New York – both big players in the Greek yogurt industry – have praised the moved.
“I commend the USDA for choosing to implement this pilot program for Greek yogurt in Idaho schools,” U.S. Senator Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) said in a statement. “Greek yogurt is one of the country’s fastest growing industries, and I hope USDA will continue the important process of making this healthy food option increasingly available to young Americans. Idaho, already a leading producer of milk and other yogurt-related ingredients, recently became home to the world’s largest Greek yogurt manufacturing plant in Twin Falls, which I recently had the opportunity to tour. Our state is ideal to serve as a part of this pilot project.”
“I am proud to see this pilot plan reach this final step, because it’s a boon for New York yogurt and dairy industries, and it’s beneficial for the health of our kids,” Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) told The Washington Post.
