The Allen County Sheriff’s Department made an arrest September 13 in connection with a series of intentionally set fires that destroyed a substantial amount of hay and pasture. Officers took Lee Berg, 19, of rural Iola into custody. Berg, a local volunteer fireman, is being held on a $300,000 bond.

Berg was charged with 21 counts of arson, according to Allen County Undersheriff Bryan Murphy. He is being held at the Allen County jail while charges are being forwarded to the county attorney.

Following up on leads received from Allen County citizens and through the use of technology, sheriff’s officers identified Berg as the person of interest. He was arrested in the area of a fire set September 12. The investigation continues to ensure Berg acted alone.
